Dear Farm Friends,
Come out to the farm this Saturday for a rare opportunity to spend some time working and learning in our pond habitat in the workshop described below. If you’ve been curious about the life of the farm pond, this is your chance to learn more and help care for it. Afterwards, relax in our outdoor kitchen with snacks from solar ovens. Details on how to register are below.
Water Gardening/Pond Clean Up Workshop & Solar Cooking Demo
Saturday, August 29, 11:00 am – 3:00 pm
Instructors: Brett Stephens & Kerry Hughes
Come out to help with our summer time pond maintenance while you learn about aquatic plants and water management. The day will include a discussion on the ecology of the pond, the importance of water sources on organic farms, strategies for management and creating plant and animal diversity. Bring your hip waders or rain boots, if you have them (a few will be provided), gloves, snacks to share, and join us in getting your hands wet!
After our work in the pond, join us in our outdoor kitchen for a snack, prepared in our solar ovens by Kerry Hughes. Participants are encouraged to come early (10am) to help harvest food from the farm for the snack.
Brett Stephens is co-owner/project manager of San Francisco Landscapes. He is certified in permaculture design, a Bay-Friendly professional, ARCSA accredited professional, and a volunteer co-manager of Alemany Farm.

Winter Gardening in San Francisco’s Secret Growing Season
Saturday, October 17, 10:00 – 11:00 am
Instructor: Hannah Shulman
This class will teach you the basics of winter gardening in San Francisco’s moderate climate and how to have herbs and greens all fall and winter long.
Hannah Shulman is the Urban Agriculture Program Coordinator at the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department. She studied at the Center for Agroecology and Sustainable Food Systems at UC Santa Cruz, and has been a garden educator with Urban Sprouts, Garden for the Environment, and 18 Reasons/BiRite Market.

Suggested donation: $20 per person; no one turned away for lack of funds
Our workshop presenters are volunteering their time; all donations will benefit Friends of Alemany Farm via our fiscal sponsor, the San Francisco Parks Alliance, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.
You can make a donation on our online donation page. In the “in honor of” field on the donation form, please enter the name & date of the workshop you’re attending. Alternatively, you can pay with check or cash at the workshop. Checks should be payable to the San Francisco Parks Alliance.

The resource center returns to Alemany Farm. Bring a bucket and bring home free compost, soil, and mulch for your own garden. You can also take advantage of Hannah’s winter gardening class described above.
