Next Weekend: Pond Workshop & Solar Cooking

Dear Farm Friends,

Save the Date: Our annual Earth Day Celebration will take place on Saturday, April 21, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. More details to come!

Read on to learn about next weekend’s workshop, this weekend’s volunteer fair, and a beekeeping apprenticeship offered by our friends at SF Bee-Cause. And of course, our regular community workdays, where you can join us in growing food and community.

Water Gardening/Pond Clean-up Workshop & Solar Cooking Demo
Sunday, February 18 — 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Alemany Farm
Instructors: Brett Stephens and Kerry Hughes
Suggested donation: $20

Water and sun are fundamental to, well … just about everything. Come out to help with our late winter pond maintenance while you learn about aquatic plants and water management. Then follow it up with some solar snacks. The day will include a discussion on pond ecology, the importance of water sources on organic farms, strategies for management and creating plant and animal diversity. Bring your hip waders or rain boots, if you have them (a few will be provided), gloves, snacks to share, and join us in getting your hands wet!

After our work in the pond, join us in our outdoor kitchen for a sweet and savory meal, prepared in solar cookers by Kerry Hughes. See various designs of solar cookers in action and taste the results of cooking with the sun.

Brett Stephens is co-owner/project manager of San Francisco Landscapes. He is certified in permaculture design, a Bay-Friendly professional, ARCSA accredited professional, and a long-time volunteer at Alemany Farm.

Kerry is a permaculture student and solar cooking enthusiast.

Register for the workshop.

Our workshop series offers both farm newcomers and regular volunteers a chance to deepen your knowledge, explore a new skill, or pick up some tips and ideas you can apply in your own garden or kitchen. All workshops will take place at the farm.

Suggested donation per workshop is $20 per person; no one turned away for lack of funds. All donations will benefit Friends of Alemany Farm via our fiscal sponsor, the San Francisco Parks Alliance, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. You can pay with cash or check at the workshop. Checks should be payable to San Francisco Parks Alliance.

This Saturday, February 10, Friends of Alemany Farm will participate in the San Francisco Botanical Garden’s Volunteer for the Environment! Volunteer Fair, featuring many Bay Area organizations offering a range of volunteer opportunities. It’s 10 am – 2 pm at the County Fair Building in Golden Gate Park (1199 9th Ave at Lincoln Way). If you’re there, stop by our table and say hello!
