Soil Workshops starting this Saturday!

Dear Farm Friends,

Thanks for everyone who joined us to make Earth Day such a great day at the farm.  Check out some photos on our Facebook page.

Now it’s time for some farm workshops, and it’s not too late to attend one—or both—of these upcoming soil fertility workshops.  They are designed to work well either as a pair or as stand-alones.  Learn some basics and bring your questions for these two experienced urban gardener/educators.

SOIL 101:
It Starts with the Soil:  Soil Fertility for Your Garden
Saturday, May 9, 10:30 am – 12:30 pm
Instructor: Jason Mark
How can you get the most out of your backyard garden? It all starts with the soil, since soil fertility is key to having healthy and strong plants that can withstand pest and disease pressures. This class will provide an overview in soil testing, soil nutrients, cover cropping in Northern California’s climate, and compost basics.
Jason Mark is a co-founder of Alemany Farm and a veteran urban gardener.

SOIL 102:
Basic Backyard Composting for the Home Gardener
Saturday, May 16, 11:30 am – 12:30 pm
Instructor: Hannah Shulman
This class will teach you the basics of composting with materials you have on hand.  We’ll discuss different types of compost, how to apply it, and if we have time, build one on site.
Hannah Shulman is the Urban Agriculture Program Coordinator at the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department.  She studied at the Center for Agroecology and Sustainable Food Systems at UC Santa Cruz, and has been a garden educator with Urban Sprouts, Garden for the Environment, and 18 Reasons/BiRite Market.
